Soldier's Creek

As the iconic symbol of American patriotism, freedom and independence, the flag needed to be included in this body of work. All the images I found, however, were so political as to be unusable. One day, I boated up Soldier's Creek in Perdido, Florida and saw a flag flying off a boathouse and reflected in the water. It was the perfect image - the flag in reflection, abstracted and apolitical.

This painting was in my studio when Katrina hit - half finished. It was completed in Houston in October '05 and I had to deal with the very negative feelings of painting water and our governmental response to the storm. Soldier's Creek was almost titled In the Wake of the Storm.

"Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."
- Francis Scott Key, The Star Spangled Banner

"Most examples of the flag in art have affirmed its iconic status....."
